UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson Welcomes New Division Head of Pediatric Surgery

Ken Liechty, MDwas appointed head of the pediatric surgery division at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucsonit is Department of Surgeryas well as director of fetal medicine at Banner – Academic Medicine and Chief Surgeon of Banner Children’s at Diamond Children’s Medical Center.

Dr. Liechty is internationally recognized for his clinical care in fetal medicine and his research on wound healing and regeneration. It starts on September 1.

“Dr. Liechty’s recruitment is a wonderful addition to the dedicated team of pediatricians at Diamond Children’s Medical Center,” said Joshua Lee, MD, senior physician at Banner – University Medicine. “His expertise in pediatric clinical care, research and academia ensures that our youngest patients have access to the best care for their needs.”

Dr. Liechty earned undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Utah. He later received certifications in General Surgery from the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) and in Fetal and Pediatric Surgery from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He remained a professor at CHOP and UPENN for five years as a fetal and pediatric surgeon and basic science researcher.

For the past eight years, Dr. Liechty has served as Co-Director of Children’s Hospital Colorado Fetal Care Center and Director of Basic and Translational Research in Pediatric Surgery.

Dr. Liechty’s lab, which has been continuously funded for the past 18 years, is the source of numerous patents and two companies. He has trained many medical students, residents and fellows who have gone on to university positions in surgery.
