Strong interest in a career as a large animal veterinarian

Dr. Joe Armstrong works at the University of Minnesota.

“There is (a strong interest), and we have this strange juxtaposition where we think there is a shortage of large animal vets, and in reality we have a lot of people still entering this field. We can debate whether or not they stay on the pitch. But there are a lot of people who are studying this and want to become veterinarians specializing in food animal medicine.

But with farms getting bigger and more remote, he tells Brownfield there are fewer areas that can support a large animal vet.

“Especially if they try not to do it alone.”
