The project was supported as an authorized activity under the Title III state SC federal grant programs.
Built in 1938, the historic Wilkinson Hall is a SC State Monument. The 16,000 square foot building is in the midst of the first phase of renovation and stabilization.
Ken Davis, SC State’s director of facilities management / planning and construction, said the work includes:
⢠Masonry repairs and repointing.
⢠Repairs and modifications of concrete / precast.
⢠Complete replacement of the sealant.
⢠Select waterproofing.
⢠Repair and modification of the integrated gutter system on the steep pitched roof.
The entire project is funded in part by a grant of $ 50,000 received in 2020 under the Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant program, funded by the National Park Service.
The grant will fund additional forensic analyzes and an evaluation of Wilkinson Hall to support the ongoing restoration and renovation process.
The grant is the second to be awarded for the preservation of Wilkinson Hall. In 2018, SC State received a grant of $ 500,000 to fund an initial assessment of the building, as well as building weathering.
