Professional nurse: clinical trials / 1 year FTC / CLS

A Professional Nurse – Clinical Trials position (one year contract) is available with our client, Clinical Laboratory Services (CLS) of the Wits Health Consortium in Braamfontein, Johannesburg – Gauteng.


Clinical Laboratory Services (CLS) is a division of the Wits Health Consortium (WHC) of the School of Pathology. The main objective of CLS is to support the teaching and research activities of the School of Pathology through the provision of laboratory services, diagnostic and research advice and support for data management in accordance with standards. good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP).

CLS is an accredited laboratory and has a comprehensive quality management plan to ensure adherence to the GCLP and its accreditation standards ensuring the integrity of the clinical laboratory for the care of participants in clinical studies. CLS has obtained ongoing certifications for SANAS (South African National Accreditation System) ISO 15189 and GCLP accreditation through the UK Qualogy Group and is also inspected by the Division of AIDS (DAIDS) annually.

Main objective of the work

  • Provide support for clinical trials or clinical programs within CLS


  • Braamfontein, Johannesburg

Key performance areasAdherence to good clinical laboratory practices (GCLP) and good clinical practices (GCP)

  • Serve as the primary contact for the sponsor / site for project initiation and planning
  • Review project protocols and gain an understanding of the scope of work and assist with service agreements as needed
  • Convert research protocols into actionable study documents to allow all laboratory personnel to access study information while performing protocol testing
  • Ensure project and protocol changes are implemented as needed
  • That all study projects are implemented according to good clinical laboratory practices (GCLP), good clinical practices (GCP)

Collecting samples from participants

  • Collection of invasive / non-invasive samples according to protocol
  • Adherence to strict infection prevention and control practices when collecting specimens. Including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to comply with contact, droplet and aerosol precautions depending on protocol and type of sample collection, etc.
  • Must practice COVID protocols

Project management / coordination

  • Coordinate the study on behalf of CLS once it has started
  • Prepare sample collection plans, project status and other administrative reports and submit them to internal stakeholders
  • Report in a timely manner on project progress, results of risk analyzes, contingency plans, technical information and team contributions throughout the project

Minimum education and training required

  • Diploma in General Nursing
  • Registered with SANC as a professional nurse

Additional education, work experience and personal skills desirable

  • Completion of Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) courses will be beneficial
  • Good phlebotomy skills
  • Good filling skills
  • Must be able to multitask
  • Must be client / participant oriented
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Must have own car

Minimum work experience required

  • 5 years after qualification with 2 years of professional experience in clinical trials (optional)
